Your Attention Is Your Life Before It Becomes Your Results
Every day, you spend something more valuable than money. You spend your attention. And once that attention is gone, you cannot get that day back. In this episode, Kellan Fluckiger challenges you to look at where your attention actually goes, because what repeatedly receives your attention gets amplified. Your attention can be scattered like sunlight, or concentrated like a magnifying glass. One burns nothing. The other can set something on fire. The life you create begins with what you choose to focus on.
The question is simple but powerful:
What is receiving your very best attention?
And perhaps even more importantly:
What is receiving only the leftovers?
Your attention is your life before it becomes your results.

You know, when Superman shoots a heat ray out of his eyes and melts stuff, that's like superpower. But you know what?He needs to be looking at something in order to do that. There used to be a Cyclops guy that had the same thing and had a beam.Do you have one?Welcome to the show.Tired of the hype about living the dream? It's time for truth. This is the place for tools, power and real talk so you can create the life you dream and deserve your ultimate life.Subscribe, share, create. You have infinite power.Welcome to your ultimate life, the podcast where we're all about helping you create purpose, prosperity and joy.You know, I just got off of a phone call with the fellow who's created a marvelous AI tool to help pinpoint opportunities for growth and cash for businesses. And I love it.And it depends on attention, and it depends on focus.Today I want to talk about attention, the thing we actually are paying attention to.And it's interesting that we use the word pay attention because creating the ultimate life purpose, prosperity and joy.Hey, we all want that purpose. We want to feel like our life means something when we get up and like, get rolling for the day.Excuse me.Prosperity.I love that word and I use it on purpose.Sometimes people just want to use, you know, cash money, but, you know, that is so small because I've been in a place and I know people who have boatloads of cash and they don't enjoy prosperity. They don't have the feeling of enough abundance, prosperity.Instead they feel like hoarding or there's more, I gotta have more, and it's different. And besides, prosperity includes a lot more than just money.Prosperity of health, relationships, love, peace, safety, abundance in all those areas. So that's why I use the word prosperity and joy. That's the funnest word. It's the shortest. You know, purpose, prosperity and enjoy is this little short word, but it is so all encompassing joy.And you know, I'm married to joy, and you all know that. And every time I use that word, I remind you and me that I am married to an angel, a divine being who happened by divine design to grace my life for years and now decades. So purpose, prosperity and joy.How do we do that?Well, it isn't.It doesn't create itself. It doesn't happen automatically because, you know, we're born, we grow up, we have whatever fortune or misfortune in that formative period, and then we get into adulthood and we have fortune and misfortune. That happens. You know, I'm Reminded of that Carl Orloff song, O Fortuna. It's in Latin, but it talks about fortune being so variable, grows and shrinks, and it's variable as the moon. And it's talking about, you know, fortune in life.So purpose, prosperity and joy.We have fortune and misfortune. But you know what, what I've learned, and I didn't used to know this, and it's taken me a long time.I mean, I'm 70.Are you 71?In five minutes.December.You know, when you see this, it'll be just a couple of months.December 10th, I'll be 71.And I now experience joy, deep joy, all day, every day.And I didn't used to do that. And in fact, it was some elusive thing that I thought only could happen if this, this, this and this.Well, when this is done, and if this happens and this works, and if, if, if.And I realized and learned deeply and truly none of that matters, I can have joy anyway. And I don't mean my precious angel. So as we go through these ups and downs, the vicissitudes of life, there's a good word for you.Look it up if you don't know.I had to the first time I heard it, which was some years ago.But it just means the ups and downs, the positives and negatives, the things that happen and the things that people do or don't do.Right.Okay.If you're going to have that, it has to be created.Because if we don't create it, remember that guy said the best way to predict the future is to create it?That's an, you know, an impression or a movement in the same direction. If you want a certain outcome, you've got to create it.Well, purpose, prosperity and joy is the same thing because either we create it or we wait till it happens to us.And if we wait till we get purpose, prosperity and joy, it's never going to come. You might have big fortune, have big cash, have a great job or windfall, or have invested early in crypto or some stock that went crazy. You may have had that kind of fortune, but that doesn't.That's an externality, and we certainly can't depend on those. And most of the time we're just waiting forever because we're looking from outside. And there's another one of those going on right now.10 Years ago, 15 years ago, crypto was small and not very well known.I remember in 2009 and 10 specifically. And that's now 17 years ago.16.17 Years ago.I Remember hearing about crypto, bitcoin, bitcoin mining, buying bitcoin mining machines. And I actually thought about it and I didn't do it.And if I had, then I'd be worth umpteen million dollars right now. Those things are always going to happen. But there's another one happening right now and I'll tell you what it is.Many of, but specifically anthropic and OpenAI are building more and more and more advanced AI models and all of them are racing toward an IPO.And an IPO is where you can get not 10%, 20, 30, 50, 100% return, but thousands of percent return and you use it.AI, whatever models you use is growing by leaps and bounds in its ability, its sensitivity, its research capability. It was part of the call that I just had this astounding AI model that this guy built to help people create profitability and so forth in their business.Amazing.Astounding.Way cool. And, and it's only getting better every month, every two months.OpenAI just released chat GPT6 estra, the high powered max thing. And when you see this, it'll be a month old, so it will already be old news. There's problems with that. You've probably heard where, you know, whistleblowers are saying we're racing toward the singularity where self improving and self programming AI is right around the corner and we're all going to be dead in, in just a few years.I'm not going there because that's not going to happen. It isn't going to happen. We may create some crazy outcomes, but destruction isn't in the cards. But that's not my point. My point is both those companies are racing unconstrained, not because they're stupid or wrong.Neither one wants to be the one to pull back and they have the other, you know, gain market advantage by being better, better models and so forth.Even though all those stories of them being turned loose and hacking into companies and breaking secure encryption and all that stuff's happening. You've seen it, I've seen it.Some of it's overblown, but some is happening. And even the companies themselves are saying, you know, we need to have some regulation, but they're not going to do self regulation. And the reason they're not is because if one company regulates and the others don't, they'll get behind. So it's going to have to come from external sources, government or whatever. My point about that is all of that is something they are creating and that they're Racing toward that ipo. Why?To have it worth the biggest IPO ever. That's the prediction that either one or both of them will be the biggest IPO in the stock market ever. And I expect that, you know, the Dow is going to go to 55 and 56 pretty quick. And I can be wrong, and I'm not a prognosticator, but anyway, purpose, prosperity and joy is something you and I create.Because if we wait for it from outside, it ain't never coming because nobody's coming to rescue us.There is help available.I know that from my experience dying. There is help, and it's infinite and it's powerful and we have to seek it and accept it.But none of that is the topic today. If we have to create this, what is the mechanism? What is the method? How do we create it?The.The steps, the mechanics? What is that?Well, I'm going to tell you the first principle, the first tool of creation.Attention is the first material of creation, your attention. And here's what I see, both in me and others.We.We operate in a multitasking mode all the time.I see people in our household watching TV at the same time, they're on their phone playing a game or looking at emails or doing stuff, and the TV is just hearing.Neither one has full attention.Do you want to create your ultimate life?It needs full, 100% undevoted, focused, powerful attention. Not all the time, right? But you need to do that. And that's why I started out with the heat beam from Superman or Cyclops or whatever, right?Attention. Our willingness and ability to pay focused attention is so important. It is creative currency. It is the mechanics and it is, you know, consecrated. We can only really focus hard on one thing at a time. And if we try to multitask, we can't.I have a funny game that I play with people.I did it at BNI Group.I was in a couple of times some years ago.A few years ago I was in BNI for three years and it was fun.And I quit doing it for a while right at the beginning of the pandemic and haven't gone back. But here's the thing. It's just a piece of paper and I pass it out in the room. And it's a game that they play and they do an activity timed, and then they do it through the same activity a different way, timed. And without fail, it's twice as fast with singular attention and twice as slow multitasking. And then people.Sometimes people get mad and they'll Say, oh, I do it again. And sometimes they improve a little, but it's never more than a 30 to 40% degradation of time. How long it takes to do this activity anyway? It's kind of fun.Attention is one of your most primal creative resources. Before your life or your company has money, before the song has notes, before the body changes, if you're working out, before a relationship heals, something must receive sustained and focused attention. So let's talk about what you spent today. How much money did you spend?Maybe, you know, $10, $50000.Maybe you bought something big.How much attention did you spend?Well, here's the truth. You spent all of the attention. You have all of it.Every day you spend it.It's like time.Time goes by and the time is gone.Your attention is gone for that day because it's tied to time.Okay, money can be replaced, but your attention is more important, more consequential. And how you divided or spent your attention, it's like time, only it's not the same, because time is gone either way.And attention can either be focused or scattered. And the example I've used before, and I like to use is think about a.You know, when you're a kid and you have a magnifying glass, right? You want to start a little piece of paper on fire.Somewhere along the line, you learned that you could do that.Hey, that's fun.So we all did it.Little plastic one, or maybe you had a glass one, and you go out and you concentrate the sun.And sure enough, you know, if you hold it steady and it cuts that little tiny circle, pretty soon the paper gets brown and then, you know, catches on fire.Well, that's focused attention. When the light of the sun that's unfocused shines on the paper, maybe it gets warm, whatever, right? So your attention can never be replaced. And you can choose whether to have it in a scattered way or to take some of the time and have it focused. And here's the thing.Your attention is your life before it becomes your results.Like, your attention is there always. It's just that most of us don't pay attention to how we are using our attention. And I know that's funny, a little silly, but we don't think about it.We're just doing what's there.I plop in front of the TV because it's a chair and somebody's got the TV on.Joy likes noise in the background, and I don't.So the TV's usually on, even though she might be in her office next door. She likes to have the sound going on.I don't.I like it quiet and focused.I, I, Because I have trained myself on purpose to do one thing.Like right now I'm with you.I'm talking about this attention thing.I'm not thinking about anything else.None.Okay, so here's your first invitation. If you want to create your ultimate life, you got to pay attention to your attention. You got to know where it goes, and you got to learn to concentrate it on the things you want to happen. It is creative currency. So if creative currency is scattered all over the place, nothing happens.Another example, when I'm in the studio doing music now, you can use things like Suno and they do all tracks together. In the studio, when you're laying down tracks, you do one at a time working on a drum track or you're working on a bass track. If you're doing that kind of music or a guitar track or a string orchestral track or a vocal track, you do one thing at a time. And if your mind is focused on all of them at once, you can't, you can't record well. Now there's a time after all the tracks are done that you listen all at once and you're looking for balance and stuff. But that's full attention also.So that's one thing at a time.I, I write books. If I'm thinking about a different book while I'm writing this one, it doesn't go well. And that's sort of obvious. Now let's talk about what, why that works and how, how to do this.Because your invitation here is first, realize that attention is, is creative capital.2.Keep track of.Pay attention to how you use your attention. How much do you know how to focus completely?Do you know how to shut off everything and be fully present? If you don't practice or haven't practiced that, it feels awkward at first. It's like when someone learns to meditate. When I teach someone about meditation, if they haven't practiced it before, the first answer is, I can't do this.I, I, My mind is freaking out.I'm thinking about all these things and meetings and bills and the weather and whether or not my leg hurts. And you know, why am I even doing this silly thing and I can't do it anyway and I'm probably doing it wrong and a hundred other things right. And all you're doing when you meditate is you're learning to pay focused attention. You're learning to direct your thinking. And so there's no wrong way to do it.But when people start, it is a shit show.Usually, yeah, I can't do this. And all it takes is practice. But what it shows is you haven't practiced focusing your attention. You can't do that right now.You can learn how to do it in a few days or week or month. And so that means a month from now, you'll be able to turn on that magnifying glass and set fire to whatever you want.So I want you to think about that. You can turn on that thing that concentrates your precious attention in such a way that it sets fire to anything you choose.Because what you repeatedly, or I repeatedly attend to gets amplified.Just like the magnifying glass, it gets amplified. In our lived experience, if we pay attention, for example, to insults and we look for them, or threats or outrage in the world or inadequacy, it's not right.Or scarcity, then those things become prominent. We see more and more of them. Not because it was any more than there was five minutes ago, but because we are paying attention to that. It's like finding a car.Yellow car.We play a game.Yellow car, right?Someone sees a yellow car, and you.Yellow card. You touch the other person.I'm not very good at it because I have not yet chosen to focus on car colors. My mind, if we're not like, talking or conversing, is focused on other things. And because I've learned to do this, I have singular focus. And I've never chosen to go after the game. And so Joy, when she's driving, she does way better.Besides, she's driving. She drives most of the time. But anyway, if we focus on the threats or the outrage or the inadequacy or the scarcity in our own lives or any of those things, we see them and we feel them and they become prominent. And when something becomes prominent, it pushes everything else off the stage, right?Because you get what you look for, you find what you seek. You know, that long time ago, seek and you shall find. There's so much truth to that.On the other hand, if you attend to gratitude or possibility or craft or love or skill or the spirit or solving things, solution, and those pathways become more available. You literally get what you look for, okay? And that is something that we can develop. So I choose to focus on gratitude, like experience in my body, the feeling of gratitude, because I like those neurotransmitters.I focus on possibility, what is possible here.I focus on love. And I don't mean I just sit there and Think love.I'm going to focus on love. It's a verb.Who can I love? How can I love?I start with joy.I have clients, people that I know.I just talk to somebody right before I'm recording this. How can I love them? How can I serve them, how can I bless them? And when I'm on purpose using my, my attention to think about that, then ways pop up.I could do this.I could say that I could make this connection, send this email, introduce these people. If I'm doing focusing on skill, or if you are, you get better at it.I mean, I've been practicing the piano all life, thousands, tens of thousands of hours.Spent 45 minutes already this morning and it's not even 9 o' clock on the, on the bench. And so that skill gets better and the pathways become more available. So I want to make sure we're not pretending that things we don't like don't exist.I'm not pretending that injustice or threat or outrage or scarcity, I'm not pretending those don't exist. What focusing is, our attention is, is we're deciding which things deserve residence in our mind. What things do we keep? All that stuff is there.Which ones are we inviting in and giving a chair and having them sit down?Okay, Awareness notices everything that's necessary, you're aware of it.Attention decides what gets fed. That's like the white and the black wolf's story. You know which one wins, the one you feed. And if you don't know that story, Google it.The story of the white and black wolf struggling in your heart.Just type that in and you'll get it.Now here's another thing to remember you, your attention.Your attention is being bid on, fought for, vied for.Every single device and platform is competing for, you know, another click, another minute, another reaction, another scroll, another swipe, another emotional spike. We've been visiting my wife's mom almost every night for six weeks. She's in the hospital, had a stroke and she's gradually getting better and we're building hope. She's in the rehab hospital now, third hospital, acute, less acute, now, the rehab, that she can come home, you know, in another four or five weeks because she's, you know, getting more and more able to walk and sit up for several hours and stuff. So we can actually take care of her here and in there.Sometimes when we're sitting there for an hour, she's just laying there and we talked to her for a while, but she becomes sort of tired and unresponsive.I don't mean non responsive, but I just mean she's laying there, she has some dimension. She can't remember stuff for very long. But anyway, so in that process, I picked up a computer game. Now, I'm not a gamer.I don't even have any games on my computer.I don't.Because I don't want to mess with them. That's a choice. But I picked one up and put it on there. And I found that very same thing.Draw me in, draw me in, draw me in.Spend a little money.Buy some more gold coins or whatever it was.And I did.And I did it for like three weeks and I spent money.Ooh.And then finally I said, you know what? This doesn't deserve my attention. So I deleted the game and it's gone. And that's not because technology is evil, but all those things are competing for your attention because your hear this, your attention has economic value. Now, if your attention has economic value, and it does, Then if you focus on what you want, you can create cash.It has economic value. So somebody who can't intentionally direct your attention is trying to get it by making it attractive. And someone like me, when I was playing that game, if I do not intentionally direct my attention, I'm carrying an unlocked wallet in the marketplace. And I was, I was spending money. And you see it.Notifications, news, outrage, message advertising, you know, political noise and nonsense.Right now there's this noise in the u. S. It's so loud about, you know, the upcoming elections in a couple months. And when you see this, it'll be like a month away.Other people's urgency. And then when you go to bed at night, you know what?I didn't do the thing that really mattered.Okay, so here's the thing I want you to take home from this.If you do not direct your attention, somebody else is going to happily rent it.If you, if we don't take it, somebody else is going to do it and try to get our money.Because your attention has economic value. Now, I want to go switch gears here and talk about this.Using your attention on purpose creates mastery. Why can an accomplished pianist do something a beginner can't?Not just talent, because their attention's been invested into touch and timing and harmony and dynamics and phrasing and fingering.Oh, I can't tell you how many hours I've spent working on fingering of Chopin etudes. And Rachmaninoff can share those and things. The attention's been directed to listening and correction.Thousands, tens of thousands, hundreds of thousands of tiny acts of attention became capability. That's why your attention has economic value. The same is true of writing or coaching or nurturing relationships or leadership in a company, or leadership of yourself or prayer.People say to me, well, I don't pray.Doesn't do any good. You haven't paid enough attention.Because I have learned to do that.I was in the same boat.I get a lot of answers, direct connection. But that is thousands of corrections of attention.Just like the piano.Leadership is the same. When I was in the C suite, I did it this way.I learned a whole bunch of stuff and then became a very, you know, highly recognized leader. The same thing with physical training. If you go to the gym, you do things wrong at first. You get a trainer and you make thousands of tiny attention corrections.Marketing online, selling your business, writing your book, loving yourself. All of those things will grow with attention. So it's currency. It's the most valuable currency you have tied to your time.Mastery is accumulated, and it is mastery is accumulated attention guided by feedback.Think about that skill in doing anything. It is, all it is, is it's attention that has stayed long enough to become embodied. So think about that. Now I go back to the beam out of your face, and I call that beam your tal beam, your T A l beam, your time. That's the finite container. It's limited. We all have the same amount. You know, I understand Einstein's time dilation, but pretty much we have the same amount.Your attention, which is con, your consciousness, aimed on purpose and love is the intensity and care and devotion brought to the object of attention.Okay?I can use my time staring at, you know, these glasses and I can stare at them all that I want with full focus and attention. And very little is likely to happen other than that I understand exactly how they're made. When you bring love, which is intensity, care, devotion to the object of your attention, then it blossoms, it grows.Wherever you shine, your tal beam grows. You can spend time without attention.I see that. You see that all the time. You can sit with someone and stare at the phone. You can give attention without much love.Cold, mechanical execution of stuff. But when all of them line up tal, time, attention, love, then that creative being becomes concentrated in music, in a marriage, in service, in prayer, in creating something that matters.Time gives your creation some room.Attention gives it direction, and love gives it force.Memorize and write that on your heart and your forehead.Time gives whatever you're creating.Purpose, prosperity and joy.Business, cash, partnership, marriage, love.Time gives room for you.To create your attention gives it a direction. And love creates the force. So my invitation to you today is to.Is to reclaim that beam.Reclaim the beam of your time, attention and love.Where are you spending it?Is it even coherent? Is your time here and your attention somewhere else? You see that all the time. The example is sitting next to someone again and looking at the phone. That time doesn't count in the context of the person. It counts in the context of whatever you're doing on the phone.Because there's your attention. So I'm inviting you to audit your time.Where or where are you using your time?Because it's finite. How are you using your attention? Is it.Is it focused? Is it clear? Is it singular?Or is it like scattered sunlight? You're trying to do it on everything at once.Because scattered sunlight doesn't work very well. It's when it's concentrated like the magnifying glass that it sets things on fire.So where are you spending your time? How are you using your attention? And then pay attention to your intensity knob, which is.I use love. You can call it whatever you like.Love is simply an a verb.It is an act of using your resources, spiritual, physical, emotional, mental resources to lift and bless someone or to create something that you think adds good to the world, makes you cash, creates a business, creates customers, does prospecting, serves whatever it is.So creates your connection with the divine, making something that really matters. So I'm going to say it one more time.Time gives creation room to happen.Your attention. When you concentrate it and do singular attention, then you give real powerful direction to the creation. And the love or intensity that you bring to the game gives it force.Because you know time and attention doesn't do anything.Time, attention and love to your partner, to your business, to your customers, to your product, to yourself, to your God.That creates real power and moves you to purpose, prosperity and joy.So here's some practical questions for you to just to think about. And this is not intended as a judgment, just a question. If you think back about today or yesterday or the day before the last two or three days, what is it that receives your best attention?Like I mentioned already, track your time for the next couple of weeks, just track your time down to maybe 15 minute increments.Got 168 hours.Figure out where they go.Just for your own sake, figure out where they go.No judgment, so you can make decisions.Talked about that last episode, but here we're talking about your attention. What is it that receives your very best attention?Do you know if you don't know, that's a different thing. It's like I'm scattered all over with my attention and I don't really know what receives my very best attention.Wow.Wouldn't you want to know what receives your very best attention? What is it?Right now the only attention I have is on you.Because I love you. Now, if you think about what is gets your best attention, here's the next question. What is it that receives just the leftovers? Now, I don't know about you, but leftovers are a fun thing for me.Like food right in the fridge.Because some leftovers are really good and some things leftovers are not.Leftover sushi never happen.I don't know, whatever reason, that's not for me anyway.Just again, so you can make decisions. What receives your best attention? You'll know that right away because it feels different. And what receives leftovers is the allocation that you have between best attention and leftovers like you want. Here's another way to describe that.Who is it that's receiving just distracted fragments? And are you happy with that? You may want, and here's a suggestion. If you've got somebody or some things that are receiving just distracted fragments, maybe you just want to end that.I don't want to give distracted fragments. Why?Because I want to reclaim that attention to something that's important. That may mean changing relationships, but it may may be more times. You're multitasking, sitting next to someone, watching the TV and looking at your phone at the same time.Three things, person, tv, phone. Those are just distracted fragments and nothing matters. And if the goal is just to unwind and relax and people say that I like to do that to unwind, I'm going to suggest that there are ways to unwind that are faster and way more powerful.Like sitting for an hour in front of the tv, distracted, just doing nothing, scrolling or whatever might be relaxing for you.But there's a way you can get that very same amount of relaxation in 15 minutes if you want it.So I invite you if you're interested in any of these things, because these are things that I become an absolute master at.There's a URL on the screen.YourUltimate Life podcast.com your ultimate LifePodcast.com There's a contact form and uses a subject line.Recovering my attention. And then I'll know where you heard this.So who gets the best?Who gets the leftovers?Who's just getting distracted fragments? Now here's another question that that might hurt your feelings.I don't know if you answer it truthfully or maybe not, because maybe you've got this handled. What am I rehearsing mentally every day?Am I rehearsing fragmentation?Am I rehearsing distraction?Do I live in a story? And this is a story, and it might piss you off?I've got so many things to do, nothing can have my full attention.I can promise you you're living an unfulfilled, scattered life and nothing's getting done. And I can make you an absolute solemn promise you can be way happier, get way more done, make more money and a bigger impact if you refine the things we're talking about today. So here's another question for you. What outrage am I allowing to rent space in my head?Because if you're carrying simmering outrage about anything, about the war in Iran, about the war in Ukraine, about the economic situation, about the price of oil, about who is or isn't the prime minister or the president or, you know, if, if you're doing that, then you're diluting your attention and you're destroying your creative power.Because allowing that to rent space doesn't change whatever that outrage is.All it does is burn you or me up.Here's another one that's food for question thought. What creation in your heart are you pretending matters? But it's getting no focused attention. That landed on me today because I was thinking about this last night and I landed on something. There was something that I had said matters and it was getting no focused attention. So I fixed that this morning and gave it some amount of focused attention. And I'm going to continue. And it changed something right away just because it started focused attention accompanied with a commitment to have more. Here's another question.Where does your intuition or the spirit or the universe, whatever you call it, where does that fit into your attention economy? What I've learned is that when I give it a very prominent place, I do way better.I know exactly what to do.I feel more focused, more clear, more powerful. Here's another question for you to leave with. What would happen if you gave one worthy. And you get to decide what worthy means. What would happen if you gave one worthy thing, uninterrupted attention every single day, even for a few minutes. And I can answer that question for me, because I do that with several specific things and it grows exponentially. It feels good and powerful. Now, I'm not saying not use your phone or not not dissing technology in any way.I'm asking you, please, to take an audit of your Time, your
